Kan Yama Kan
("The Mobile Library")
While ACFA would like to one day be able to provide library service to all the disadvantaged Arab children in Israel, it recognizes the need to initially limit the scope of the Mobile Library project. Therefore, we began serving rural Arab communities in the Galilee and Triangle regions of the country. These areas contain a very large Arab populations and are easily accessible from the city of Haifa, where the project is based.

The Mobile Library is transported in a large van. Additional books are be stored in Haifa to replenish it on a semi-weekly basis, or as needed. Children are paying a nominal yearly subscriber fee of NIS 25, in order to instill in them a sense of responsibility. Teachers and principals of the schools in the communities served by the Mobile Library are asked encouraging the children to use its resources. The library is operating six days out of every month: half days from Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, and full days on Friday and Sunday, when children are not in school. Its rounds are taking it to 8 villages and communities every two weeks, after which it is returning on its route to collect borrowed books and distribute new ones. Children and their parents are informed in advance about the day and approximate time of the Mobile Library's stop in their community. It is anticipated that we succeeded to attract a minimum of 1000 subscribers.
The success of the Mobile Library is monitored by the librarian/driver and designated members of ACFA. Progress will be judged through the number of subscribers and the extent of their use of the library. Local teachers are consulted and asked for their evaluation of the effects of the Mobile Library on the performance of subscribers in school. In addition, the library's users and their parents are asked to evaluate the library every six months through a simple questionnaire. In the long term, we hope to develop a system from analyzing the effects of the improved access to reading materials on the users scholastic performance.
